Alex Murray

Projectionist at Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre & Senior Box Office Assistant at Midsteeple Box Office, Dumfries

Tell us a little about what you do and why you love it?

My main post is Film Theatre Projectionist at the RBC Film Theatre. I started here in 1987 when it opened and I have been here through all the changes – from 16mm and 35mm prints to a full digital system and hopefully satellite broadcasts very soon.  I enjoy the challenge of keeping up to date with new technology

In the last few years I’ve also been running the Midsteeple Box Office in the centre of town selling for everything from small village halls to festivals; we are happy to promote and sell for anyone running any size of event in D & G. I have built up the profile of the Midsteeple and have been involved with the D&G Arts Festival ticket sales. It’s a fun job dealing with promoters and going to see events. There is a lot going on in D&G.

What makes Dumfries and Galloway special to you?

Dumfries and Galloway has been my home most of my life. I grew up in the country and I love the spectacular scenery. I hill walk and mountain bike on the 7 Stanes. Lots of nice walks to take my wee “westie” Smudge on. You are never more than a few minutes from the countryside wherever you are in our region.

Are you involved in other arts and cultural activities?

I cover attendants duties at the Robert Burns Centre, Robert Burn’s House and Dumfries Museum, to name a few. I’m always busy.

What projects are you involved in right now?

It’s panto time again, Oh no it’s not!

Hopes, ambitions or plans for 2015?

Not to fall off my mountain bike as much would be good start. To finally be able to screen satellite broadcasts on screen at the RBCFT. To build the Midsteeple Box Office into a major source for information and ticket sales for the whole of the region.

Have you always been in this role?

The RBCFT was my first permanent job. Before that I trained as an electrician, planted trees, repaired paths, worked in a warehouse – a bit of everything really…

If we asked a friend to tell us something surprising about you, what would they say?

I’m a big kid and have a passion for scones. I’m always the first person to volunteer to get my photo in the paper.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?

Enjoy life. If you want to do something silly, then do it.
