Tell us a little about what you do and why you love it?
I promote stand-up comedy in the Dumfries and Galloway area by organising comedy nights for clubs, pubs, village halls and organisations. I also run my own pop up comedy club “The Bearded Dug Comedy Club”.
After studying stage management, drama and contemporary dance in my spare time in my 20s, I then worked for 10 years as a volunteer front of house staff member at an Arts Centre in Hampshire and mainly worked at the comedy club there; I got to know the promoters and comedians on the circuit and caught the bug for stand-up comedy as it is great “food for the soul”. When I moved to Scotland, I organised two successful comedy nights for my village hall. After some friends approached me to source some comedians for their events, I decided to set up Berry Promotions. A friend recently described me as “thriving on making others happy” whether that be in my day job (see below) or at the comedy nights. Therefore, that’s why I do this kind of work.
What makes Dumfries and Galloway special to you?
The comedy sheep at the back of my house, the stars I can see virtually every night, “the no bother” attitude and the rolling landscape that surrounds me are just a start. After living most of my life in cities, I feel truly lucky to have been able to move and live here; it’s an inspiring place.
My club, The Bearded Dug Comedy Club, will be appearing at the D&G Arts Festival in May 2016 at The Kings Arms Hotel, Lockerbie.
2015 (what’s left of it!)…
On the 12th December, my club The Bearded Comedy Club, will be popping up at The Kings Arms Hotel, Lockerbie. I also hope to reach out to other groups and organisations to provide a great evening of laughter for them.
During the day…
After working for 22 years for the civil service in the field of health, safety and the environment, I now run my own environmental advice consultancy to small businesses, and a proofreading and CV writing service to young people and professionals. I am also a keen creative writer with the Lockerbie Writers. I love contemporary theatre, dance and films and also walking in the D&G countryside and coastline.
Something surprising about me that my friends would tell you…
“She has a zombie apocalypse escape plan” and “likes to think outside the box.” I think the two may go together!
