Paula Gilfillan

Tell us a little about what you do and why you love it?

I create stand-up comedy shows (for adults and children) through my company, Bearded Dug Comedy.  My shows have popped up at various venues across Dumfries and Galloway. Many of the comedians I work with are professional actors and writers, and even though you may not have heard their name before, they often write material for the comedians you see on the TV and shows you hear on Radio 4.

Here comes the science bit…laughter is a great stress reliever (mentally and physically).  It lowers your blood pressure, gives your upper body a good work out and releases pain supressing opiates into your blood stream.  Comedy nights are also very social occasions too – a time to catch up with friends and have ‘a laugh’.

So, why do I like creating comedy shows?  Please see above.

What makes Dumfries and Galloway special to you?

The flora, fauna and the stars.  My company name is even a homage to the dogs that herd Lockerbie sheep and the language spoken in the area.

Future projects…

I’d like to work with young people and children more, and to see Bearded Dug Comedy settle into a regular venue.

Are you involved in any other activities?

During the day, I work as a freelance academic science proofreader and copyeditor (I worked as a research and an applied scientist for 20 odd years).  However, I also worked in stage management, performed as a contemporary dancer, and volunteered at The Spring Arts Centre in Hampshire for 10 years where I worked at their resident comedy club.  I am also an avid creative writer and trustee of Lockerbie Writers. You can catch a few of my stories in our book the Lockerbie Writers’ Anthology; a copy of which is in Lockerbie library.

Something surprising about me that my friends would tell you…

“She has a zombie apocalypse escape plan”.
