Tell us a little about what you do and why you love it?
I’m a Professional Photographer. I have a passion for making high quality and striking images. I need to be creative and this is my outlet. My bread and butter work is press and commercial photography. This can be anything from shooting for local/national new papers. Editorial shoots for magazines like DG life and Our Wigtownshire. PR shoots for high profile clients. through to more commercial subjects like off shore engineering projects. My real passion is “LIVE!” entertainment and event photography. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than capturing a moment. Conveying the whole atmosphere or emotion of an event in a single still. Locally I cover the Wickerman, Eden, RNLI Park-Fest, Lowland Gathering, Red 2 Day. My subject matter at these events are a combination of performance artist and punters alike. I have built up a reputation for event photography with my own style of capture and post editing. I like my images to sing with colour and vibrancy. If they happen to be mono. Then I use techniques I have learned. To give my final images… IMPACT!.. For me the creative process is just as enjoyable as the finished piece of work. I do consider photography an art. I just use the things I see around me to create my pictures. Mainly seeing things simplistically as shapes, colours and textures, sometime even emotions.
What makes Dumfries and Galloway special to you?
The people. I moved here 5 years ago. I have found the people to be welcoming and easy going. Just like me. Also. There is plenty going on. As I work press. I get to see all sorts of wonderful events. From local village fates to big weekend events, such as Eden or Wickerman. I love the space, as well. Being able to go to a beach in a remote location and feel like I’m marooned on an island some where wild and untamed. Mega. And the sky’s can be EPIC! from Wild storm clouds to beautiful “Little fluffy clouds” and not forgetting the night sky. With its celestial magnificence. I have never felt more at home than when I walk around the country side and coastal areas of Dumfries & Galloway.
Are you involved in other arts and cultural activities?
I cover quite a lot of community and social events in my line of work. So often asked to get involved with PR work. Not forgetting I will most likely be at events. On behalf of the press or pr companies or the event organisers them selves.
What projects are you involved in right now?
RNLI Park Fest. Just being creating a promo image to launch the event nationally. Also, Stranraer regeneration through the Arts. There is talk of an Oyster festival and all things sea food. This may well be on my list
Hopes, ambitions or plans for 2015?
I would really like to have an exhibition of my work from around the region. showing the events and people I’ve encountered. Though out the year. It would be an ecliptic mix of colours and genres. Covering anything and everything I have been involved in. Or simply seen an opportunity to create and image and simple done just that.
Have you always been in this role – or have you/do you do anything else?
I have always had a creative side. But I find photography suits my skill set the best.
If we asked a friend to tell us something surprising about you, what would they say?
He’s a little eccentric….. To quote a recent article in Our Wigtownshire magazine “There is a creative genius in that madness”. Their words not mine. Page 23. Still gives me a laugh 🙂
Anything else you’d like to tell us?
Hoping to make the leap into film work over the next few years. Combining my skill with stills to motion images. The possibilities for being more creative are simple endless! I cant wait to learn the new skills and start producing films. I think with my take on life and my ability to visualise things in my mines eye. Then reproduce it in an image. Will make my work stand out. Hopefully people will like my film work as much as my stills…..!
