Phil McMenemy

Fine Art and Landscape Photographer at The Laurieston Gallery, Castle Douglas

Tell us a little about what you do and why you love it
I’m Phil and I’m a fine art and landscape photographer: I love what I do, what I create, where I create it and the folk it brings me into contact with!
I have been a photographer now for almost ten years and the Gallery at Laurieston has been open since 2008.
I love Scotland in general but I love Galloway in particular – it is my inspiration which borders on an obsession – I see the seasons, the weather, the landscape as a challenge – a challenge that I shall never ever really ‘win’ but a challenge I’m well up for all the same.
Despite my colour-blindness and lack of formal qualifications I think I have had the best training ever – getting wet, lost, getting it wrong and learning always learning.

What makes Dumfries and Galloway special to you?
Its moods, its vagaries, its lostness, its opportunities, its light, its frustrations, its provocativeness, its non-linearness and its lilt!

Are you involved in other arts and cultural activities?
Spring Fling, ex founder of the Galloway Photographic Collective but am always looking for organic collaborations with others.

What projects are you involved in right now?
Opening the new Gallery at Laurieston has taken up so much time over the preceding couple of years. But I have a rich history of working with other arts professionals and look forwards to the opportunity of doing the same again in the future.

Hopes, ambitions or plans for 2015?
Keeping the business going in the right direction and above water! The new Gallery at Laurieston space is, however, taking up much of my headspace and my time presently but we are nearly there – which leaves me trepidatiously excited!!

Have you always been in this role – or have you/do you do anything else?
This business feels like  a different Phil. I have been an engineer, a child and adolescent psychiatric nurse and nurse manager, a stay-at-home-dad, a litter picker, a squid factory employee, a vineyard worker and an olive tree basher! I work on the principle that we are a long-time-dead!

If we asked a friend to tell us something surprising about you, what would they say?
Phil is just Phil – do I need say any more!?
