DGU commissioned The Articulate Cultural Trust to develop a Youth Arts Framework for Dumfries and Galloway, to better understand current provision and to seek recommendations to help make youth arts in the region the best that it can be.
As a result of this, DGU appointed two Youth Arts Advocates, Catriona McGhie and Lauren McDougall to help develop the Youth Arts Strategy Framework and establish an accompanying identity of DGU, catered and directed towards young creative practitioners in Dumfries and Galloway, DGyoUth.

Why Catriona?
Catriona is passionate about both Dumfries & Galloway and the Arts. As a young person living within the region, she is aware of some of the issues which young people face when trying to engage with the Arts, some of which she has faced herself.
Why Lauren?
Lauren is a multi-disciplinary artist who has recently relocated back home to Dumfries and Galloway from South London. As an emerging artist herself, she is eager to help share and promote young artists in Dumfries and Galloway, and the amazing opportunities available to them around the region.
What are the Youth Arts Advocates doing now?
Catriona initially considering the 6 key recommendations from the Youth Arts Strategy Framework and selected Recommendations 3 and 6 to be the main area for research and development.
RECOMMENDATION 3:
Develop clear progression pathways for young people to broaden and deepen arts and cultural engagement.
RECOMMENDATION 6:
Develop and build on opportunities for children and young people to have a meaningful voice in cultural planning and provision.
A list of “deliverables” was then put together for each recommendation.
RECOMMEDATION 3:
Create a “Funding Map” with a focus on Youth Arts Funds. There will be a “Guide to Writing Funding Applications” to accompany this.
Develop a “Young Emergents Award”, providing funding for emerging artists in D&G.
Create a Signposting space / Digital Noticeboard/ Email newsletter for young people to access and find out about what opportunities are in the region.
Create and work with a region wide Focus Group of organisations who are already working with Young People. Make the connections and get them involved with the process.
RECOMMENDATION 6:
Once the Focus Group has taken shape, develop a region wide Youth Arts Panel, engaging directly with young people to get them involved with the conversations.
Offer opportunities for in person / online group meetings with young people across the region, getting them to engage with the planning and implementing of an Online Hub/ group for young people to connect with organisations both locally and nationally.
